This blog post is about the research on music choice I conducted coming together with my team. During the research we came across some great tips to choosing the perfect soundtrack for our film.
What do Soundtracks do?
I found that soundtracks make films come to life and help create the tone and mood for the film. The soundtrack can be responsible for storytelling as well. They do this by building up pace in a scene, show a character changed emotions, and show a passing of time.
Identify the Mood of the Scene
When researching over several websites on soundtracks I found that knowing what the exact atmosphere in the scene is needed to produce a good soundtrack. I identified the opening scene as happy and enjoying the game, but slowly progress to something bad about to happen as it shows Gabo getting injured. By identifying the atmosphere the tempo should be fast pace and the rhythm should be progressive.
Music Choices
-MTG ARC Funk by Tokoyophile
This song will be for the build up in scene 1 as the ball is being passed around and Gabo nutmegs the defender. This will build the atmosphere making the film fast pace. The commentators voice will be over the music as it has no lyrics.
-Waking up by Reveille(Not the Bugle call)
This calm music will be background music for the credits to roll and for Gabo waking up from his nightmare. This will also be background music as Gabo makes his breakfast.
-Memories by Maroon 5
This selection is for the flashback scene showing how Gabo has memories of him playing younger in a tournament. This will make the scene feel sad and happy as he remembers and at the same time has lost the ability to play.
Things to Consider
On various sources I found that we don't always have to use dramatic music for climatic scenes. For example with the scene of Gabo getting hurt we could use an uplifting song. This could be on top of the world to create a sense of Irony because Gabo has just got hurt but he is on top of the world. Also it is important that the music cuts off at the exact time we need it to. As Gabo gets hurt the music could drop immediately or fade into the background.
Analyze
The choices that we made for the music was challenging as we had to find songs that relate to soccer. We had to use a website called sound stripe to find the perfect music. So far the music choices we made might change or we might add more. Overall we are on track.
Reflection
The next step for the project is to start to edit the film and add in the music choices we have made. We should be able to do this by Wednesday and finish with the film. Next we will be talking about changes we made.
