Researching Film Media

Welcome back to another blog post! Today we are discussing and exploring the history of film media.  Film media is a form of communication that uses images that move describing a story that is either fiction or nonfiction. In 1891, Thomas Edison along with his assistant William Dickson invented the Kinetoscope. The Kinetoscope is a type of device that allowed a person to view moving images on film that were illuminated by a source of light through a peephole. This became so popular that these types of machines were installed in hotel lobbies, arcades, and parks. Several friends encouraged him to extend and further develop this invention so it could serve an audience as opposed to one person watching the film. Edison refused and felt it would not be profitable.  Unfortunately, Thomas Edison did not obtain an international patent for his invention, therefore the Lumière brothers capitalized on his error. In 1895, the brothers patented the Cinématographe. The Cinématographe was a portable camera that captured moving images, processed the film and projected it on a screen to view by an audience. They traveled extensively throughout Europe seeking their next subject to film. The moving picture entertainment grew so quickly that other companies were competing with the Lumière brothers. Edison realized what he missed out on and he purchased the rights to Vitascope which allowed audiences to view a full length motion film. Over the years film media technology has improved by adding sound, color, and special effects. Film media had played an important role in our society by influencing they way people think about politics, culture and life in general. Next blog post we will be talking about elements of film media.
